With the August 1 release to manufacturers, Microsoft’s Windows 8 is on schedule for its release date in late October, when it will be available preloaded on new PCs, as well as through one of the recently announced upgrade programs.
In the meantime, Windows 8 will be available to those with MSDN and TechNet subscriptions on August 15.
The next day the Volume Licensing Center will offer Windows 8 enterprise edition for download to IT professionals with existing Microsoft Software Assurance for Windows and Microsoft Partner members will also have access.
On August 20, Microsoft Action Pack Providers will have access to download, while businesses without Software Assurance will have to wait till September 1 for purchase.
The rest of consumers will have the option of upgrading an existing edition of Windows (XP, Vista, or 7) for only $39.99. For those looking to purchase a new PC and do not want to wait till the end of October, PCs purchased now with Windows 7 can be upgraded for only $14.99.
