Microsoft’s Surface Tablet RT sales so far were described as “moderate” by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer back in mid-November.  The sales and availability of the Surface has been somewhat handcuffed due to only being available on Microsoft’s website and through its own retail stores, which there are only 34 permanent stores and 31 temporary holiday pop-up stores.

However, Surface RT Tablets are now on sale at all Staples stores, which operates nearly 1,900 retail stores in the United States and Canada. The Surface will also went on sale at 1,400 Best Buy stores starting December 15 and is expected to also be available at Walmart stores in the future.

Microsoft distributing the Surface to other retailers will both benefit consumers and Microsoft itself. Going from 65 Microsoft retail stores to over 3,000 Staples and Best Buy stores by this weekend alone, the Surface RT quickly becomes much more accessible to interested buyers who were hesitant to spend $500-$700 on a product sight unseen.  The result is a better opportunity for shoppers to see firsthand what the Surface has to offer and gives Microsoft the chance to better display the many features of its first ever computer to more people.
